Job Title: Data Analysis & Visualization Student Assistant
Department: Research Data Services / University Libraries
Position Summary:
The University Libraries is seeking a motivated student employee with considerable knowledge in data analysis and visualization to support the operations and outreach of the University Libraries DataSpace. The successful candidate(s) will be under the direct supervision of the Data Curation Specialist.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with library patrons’ data analysis and visualization needs for their research.
- Support faculty, staff, and students in using the data space (e.g., answering basic questions, referring advanced issues to staff)
- Help maintain documentation, FAQs, and tutorials concerning data analysis and visualization for users
- Review and enhance metadata to ensure the quality and discoverability of research data preserved in the TXST Dataverse Repository
- Assist with outreach activities such as workshops, promotional materials, and events
- Work with team members to identify opportunities for improving workflows and user experience
- Perform other duties as assigned, like software installation, testing, printing, scanning, and research projects.
All Data Space staff get the chance to enhance their data analysis and visualization skills through various related professional development activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Enrolled as a student at Texas State University and in good academic standing (≥ 2.5 GPA)
- Available to work 10–20 hours per week during the academic semester.
- Completed at least 15 credit hours of coursework in data analysis, statistics, or data visualization.
Required Skills:
- Intermediate knowledge in data analysis and visualization
- Proficient with data software and programming like R & RStudio, Python, SPSS, STATA, Mplus, Tableau, Power BI, SQL etc.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficient in Qualitative Data Analysis Software, like NVivo or MaxQDA
- Interest in research data, digital preservation, or information science
- Familiarity with metadata standards or data management concepts (e.g., FAIR principles) is a plus
- Basic understanding of data formats (e.g., CSV, PDF, images, etc.)
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Supervisor: Data Curation Specialist
Work Schedule: Students in this position are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week (M-F between 8 and 5).
Employee Evaluation Process: Student employees are evaluated by their supervisor at the end of each long semester.
Compensation: Compensation is based on experience and relevant skills, with eligibility for annual raises contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluations.
