Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the health of natural areas. Stewards, in partnership with the DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR – OSMRE NATIONAL TECHNICAL TRAINING PROGRAM, are seeking a motivated and detailed oriented service member that is eager to gain hands on experience in the mining industry.
This unique opportunity will allow the service member to work with a federal agency dedicated to protecting and reclaiming mined lands, ensuring the development of the nation’s energy resources, and promoting environmental stewardship. The project work will indirectly support the current administrations environmental goals.
Description of Duties:
- Assist in administrative logistical support work of coordinating arrangements for approximately 65 State, Native American, and OSMRE’s offices that participate in OSMRE’s National Technical Training Program.
- Work with course coordinators to ensure the processing of travel documentation in DOI’s Travel Management System
- Conduct market research for hotel, transportation, and supplies procurement
- Assist in creating drafts and edits informational memorandums and correspondence relating to technical training and all OSMRE training functions.
- Utilize personal computer software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database software as well as OSMRE/DOI systems to meet program objectives.
- Screen, review, and process student nominations manually and in DOI's Learning Management System (LMS).
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- At least 17 years of age
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
- A keen interest in environmental protection, mining, and technical training
Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:
- Typically, this position is expected to serve a 35-to-40-hour workday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
- This is a hybrid opportunity.
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- On-site trainings will include travel management system, hotel procurement, FBMS, professional correspondence and Microsoft Suite Training.
- Member will gain hands-on experience in environmental policy and technical training within a federal agency and insight into the operations and initiatives of the OSMRE.
- Member will gain networking opportunities with professionals in the environmental and mining sectors and develop professional skills in research, data analysis, and program coordination.
Benefits:
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,817.14
- Living Allowance of $592 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
