Resident Assistant

Position is contracted for the 2024 – 2025 academic year. This is a grant funded position.  Continuation of this position is contingent upon grant funding.

Reports to the Director of the Student Support Services San Marcos Program.

The resident assistant assists with various residential duties during the second session of Summer, June 29 – August 1. The program conducts a five-week residential initiative each summer, aiming to successfully transition incoming Fall 2025 freshman to college academics and living. This summer residential program integrates an early college experience with academic courses, residential living, and other experiences, fostering holistic growth and development among participants.

Important information for applicants:

Salary: $2000 Stipend (depending on experience) payable at the end of summer program + Meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) (Monday – Friday, and Sundays), and housing (TBD).

Time Commitment: June 24 – August 2, 2024, Sunday – Friday.  RA resides in resident hall, Sunday evening through Friday afternoon throughout the five-week summer program. RA is to be on call from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, including special event weekends. 

Must possess a valid driver’s license. 

Mandatory Training – Available prior to start of programming beginning June 24, 2025. (via meetings at the target schools and or on teams/zoom)

Duties:

  • Reside in the residence hall, Sunday evening through Friday afternoon throughout the six-week summer program.
  • Be on call from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, including special event weekends.
  • Supervise up to 10 program participants, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Enforce program and residence hall rules and regulations.
  • Assist in the effective operation of the residence hall, fostering a safe and conducive environment for living and learning.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor to student participants.
  • Develop and facilitate programs and recreation activities aimed at student growth and maturity.
  • Be available to students and other Student Support Services staff for conferences addressing student issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Student Support Services staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Junior standing or above, preferred.
  • Major in Social Work, Psychology, Education, or related field.
  • Demonstrate motivational and organizational skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must not have another job or be enrolled in more than one summer course at Texas State University or another university (if you are enrolled in a course at Texas State you can only work 24 hours a week).

Preferred Qualification:

  • 2-3 years of experience tutoring on a variety of core subjects (Math, Science, English). 
  • Experience working with college students preferred.
  • Prior experience in a residential setting preferred.

  • Weekly and monthly (informal)
  • End of each Semester (formal) facilitated by Program Director.
