About the Greys River Ranger District:

The Greys River Ranger District is one of six districts in the forest. It is best known for the Greys River corridor, which contains the most highly traveled road in the forest and provides important accessibility to a diverse range of backcountry and front country recreation throughout the year. This diversity of opportunities is founded on a highly valued patchwork of areas for developed and dispersed camping, motorized and non-motorized travel, hunting, fishing, and harvest of firewood, Christmas trees, and other forest products.  Expanses of backcountry areas remain cherished havens for hiking, horseback riding, and other traditional uses.

The local communities of Star Valley enjoy multi-generational connections to the lands being managed, based on longstanding forest use and rich local history. The district has a long established, nationwide recognition for remarkable mule deer hunting, and contributes significantly to Wyoming’s black bear hunting opportunities.  The Greys River and its tributaries provide extensive, well connected, and intact aquatic habitat that is important to the conservation status of the Snake River cutthroat. The district also contains one of the world’s only cold-water periodic springs and portions of the historic Lander Trail.

In winter, the district becomes a coveted destination for snowmobiling by providing easy trail rides and wildlife viewing, challenging terrain for advanced riders, and close proximity to quality snowpack for a multi-state area. The recreation program in the district manages 4 rental cabins, 4 open campgrounds, a year-round robust outfitter and guide program, hundreds of miles of motorized and non-motorized trails and special recreation events of all kinds.

Star Valley is the collective name for the communities that make up the “star valley front” which runs parallel and through the Greys River Ranger District. It is located in Lincoln co, WY between the Salt River Range in western Wyoming and the Webster Range of eastern Idaho. The altitude of the valley ranges from 5,600 feet (1,700 m) to 7,000 feet (2,100 m). Three major Wyoming rivers, the Salt River, the Greys River and the Snake River meet near Alpine Junction at Palisades Reservoir. There are approximately 10 communities that make up the star valley front, and they vary greatly in make-up but are all fairly rural locations. There are 3 grocery stores along the valley, several hardware/ maintenance/ and outdoor stores, a moderate selection of restaurants and bars. Many services and stores are closed on Sundays.
