Field Work (75% of Duties) -
- Work in groups of 2 (and groups up to 6) performing on-the-ground pedestrian surveys and recording surface historic and precontact cultural resources.
- Surveys will be directed and planned by a lead archaeological technician (leads) using established procedures and survey methodologies. Fieldmaps will be used to record survey data. An introduction and training will be provided upon arrival.
- Recording cultural resources will include both new resources that are found during survey and monitoring those that have been previously documented. Previous documentation and information may vary in quality and accuracy.
- It is expected that you will follow existing safety procedures applicable to the type of survey you are conducting and area you are surveying in. Regular (weekly) tailgate safety sessions are required for each crew.
- Documentation of new cultural resources, or monitoring of existing resources, will use Survey123 on tablets. Data collected will be quality controlled by leads.
- Site and Survey data collected through the season will be downloaded on a regular basis (weekly) using Wi-Fi hotspots. This data will be quality controlled by leads to ensure accuracy and will then be organized digitally. This data will then be used to produce location and sketch maps of newly located resources, or to correct inaccurate GIS data for existing cultural resources.
- Field time may also consist of flagging these resources based on current or previous data to ensure their protection in upcoming project implementation work (timber sales, road work, etc.).
Office Work (25% of Duties, or as needed) -
- Gather and scan existing resource documentation that is needed prior to field survey
- Review, correct, and finalize forms produced by Survey 123 and verify with Fieldmaps to ensure quality-controlled data.
- Using ESRI's ArcPRO program, compose sketch and location maps using collected and quality-controlled field data. An introduction and training will be provided at the appropriate time.
- Research of reference materials such as State and National Register files, historic documents, archeological reports, maps, and aerial photos may be needed.
- Forms composed will be reviewed by leads for grammar, accuracy, and completeness.
Schedule: Work schedule will be Mon-Thur 7:00am -5:30pm, reporting to the Tahoe National Forest's Supervisor's Office in Nevada City daily. Schedule adjustments will be limited and granted upon approval of the District Archaeologist.
