Round Rock Writing Center Consultant

Department: The University Writing Center (UWC) is dedicated to helping Bobcats develop writing as an intellectual activity integral to productivity in their scholarly, civic, professional, and cultural lives.
Job Summary: A Writing Consultant is an hourly worker position that provides peer support for all Bobcats. The UWC operates on a one-to-one consulting format where Writing Consultants provide feedback, writing strategies, and other forms of peer review for writers on campus.
Job Duties:
- Develop writers through individualized sessions according to best practices and writers’ needs
- Assist with maintaining the values, vision, and mission of the UWC
- Create a positive, effective environment for supporting learning
- Deliver workshops, tours, and assist with campus outreach (e.g., tabling) as trained and assigned
- Serve as a front desk attendant to help consultants and visitors navigate the UWC
On-campus job location: ASBN 100 (San Marcos), Avery 206 (Round Rock)
Supervisors: Joanna Collins and Lauren Brentnell (Associate Directors), Sarah Hart Micke (Assistant Director)
Work schedule: Students in this position are expected to work between 8-20 hours per week. Additionally, applicants must be able to attend our paid mandatory training on in August 2025 and on Fridays as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required
- Minimum GPA: 3.0
- B or better in first-year writing
- B or better in all other writing intensive classes
- Good writing and communication skills
Preferred
- All majors are welcome to apply; we are currently prioritizing graduate students, active service members, Veterans of the Armed Forces, and applicants from the sciences and health professions
- Sophomores through graduate students who have at least 2 semesters left at Texas State
- Students who want to continue developing skills and knowledge about supporting students and improving writing
Employee Evaluation Process: Employees will be observed during the required training process and once per academic year. Additional check-ins will be scheduled on an as-needed basis.
Payrate Determination: Student employees begin at a rate of $13.50/hour with opportunities for pay increases as aligned with experience. In addition, veterans and employees who can work on the Round Rock campus begin at $13.75/hour.

- At the end of the Employment Application Form, add writing sample(s) of 6-25 pages of single-authored works that help us get a sense of you as a writer and thinker (you will have to cut and paste). The 25-page cap is to accommodate long works, not to set an expectation. We are interested more in a variety of experiences with writing than with length of submission and invite you to submit multiple shorter samples that show a range of academic and professional writing.

- You should include any experience you have in writing and/or mention if you:
- know any writing styles and guides (example: APA, MLA, AP, Chicago, or Turabian)

- have experience consulting or teaching, particularly in writing
- understand how people learn, particularly how they learn to write
- took first-year writing at Texas State
- completed a thesis or carried out a sustained research project
- have experience in scientific writing, graduate-level writing, professional writing, or publishing scholarly writing and research
