Research and Data Services Assistant
Department: University Libraries are currently seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic student employee to join our team as a Research & Data Services Student Assistant at the Alkek Library.
Job Summary: In this role, you will report to the Assistant Director of Research & Data Services and will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with the Research & Data Services Team, gaining valuable knowledge about our library's digital publishing platforms and processes, as well the latest publishing and open access trends.
As a Research & Data Services Student Assistant, you will primarily be responsible for assisting in the seamless publishing and archiving of articles from an Open Journal Systems (OJS) instance to our DSpace TXST Digital Repository. No previous experience is required, however, if you have a passion for publishing, scholarly communications, or journalism, it would be a definite advantage.
As part of the Research & Data Services Team, you will be assisting with daily operations, customer service, and administrative tasks. This role includes front desk responsibilities, managing inquiries, and scheduling the conference room calendar to ensure efficient use of space.
Job Duties:
- Learn about the library's digital publishing platforms and processes.
- Assist in the smooth archiving of articles from OJS journals to DSpace.
- Assist the Assistant Director for Research & Data Services in providing technical support to journal managers.
- Serve as the first point of contact at the front desk, assisting visitors, students, and staff with inquiries.
- Manage and maintain the conference room calendar, including scheduling reservations, confirming bookings, and addressing conflicts.
- Provide support for library or department events, meetings, and workshops as needed.
- Maintain a welcoming and professional environment at the front desk area.

- Motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently and as part of a team.

Employee Evaluation Process: Student employees are evaluated by their supervisor at the end of each long semester.
Payrate Determination: ll student employees begin at the starting pay rate and may increase by .25 after two long semesters (fall and spring) of employment with a positive evaluation from their supervisor using the Student Employee Career Readiness Evaluation form.
