2025 DLS Internship Program: Map and Records Intern (Graduate)

This summer internship is anticipated to take place from June through September 2025 for a total of 12-weeks. Start dates can be flexible.

The Department of Local Services Road Services Division is seeking a graduate student intern to join our Business Support Services Unit for an excellent opportunity to be part of local government! In this position, you will use your skills to support the Map and Records Center make progress on significant projects, which benefits the whole Road Services Division. This is an exciting opportunity to not only gain direct working experience, but also to support and exemplify King County’s True North and values.

Who Are We? 

As the largest division within the Department of Local Services, Road Services Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of roads, 188 bridges, 5.7 million linear feet of drainage ditches, and other related infrastructure in unincorporated King County. Our work directly supports a wide range of functions that provide responsive and effective support to residents and internal Roads and King County customers.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Apply principles of library and information science to develop innovative approaches to managing records, specifically those related to engineering and construction projects.
  • Research and apply best practices to collaboratively update and improve our central filing system.
  • Understand how the Map and Records Center supports and maintains the proper retention requirements for County Road Engineer records.
  • Learn how tools and technologies help ensure records are readily accessible for use by staff and the public.
  • Familiarize yourself with key records preservation principals directly observed on-site.
  • Contribute to effectively supporting internal and external customers by assisting in locating records and making referrals to other agencies
  • Recognize legal requirements of the Public Records Act and how to follow best practices in fulfilling records requests including public disclosure training.

Learning Outcomes and Deliverables

  • Direct access and opportunity to engage with public sector organizational leaders.
  • Participate in off-site visits to gain firsthand experience of records management practices throughout the agency and observe public infrastructure projects in the field.
  • Leverage technology tools to support effective electronic record management, including supporting efforts to digitize agency records. Learn to research and apply best process improvement practices, delivering actionable recommendations on completing inventory assessments.
  • Develop skills in supporting the proper management of records to satisfy Public Records Act requirements.
  • Gain technical writing experience supporting the documentation of institutional knowledge.
  • Strengthen your ability to review, analyze, and interpret different types of engineering and maintenance files, contributing to…the overall history of the unincorporated King County Road Network.
