General Summary

The GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Intern will gain valuable experience in the electric utility industry and exposure to working with the maintenance, development, and operation of Rayburn Country Electric Cooperative, Inc.’s (Rayburn) GIS System. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work closely with experienced GIS professionals and to develop a deeper understanding of GIS applications in the utility sector. 

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities / Knowledge 

  • Shadows, supports, and collaborates with GIS Developers and Analysts.
  • Assists with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of geographic data.
  • Supports the creation and maintenance of maps and GIS databases.
  • Conducts spatial data analysis and presents findings to team members.
  • Collaborates with various departments to support GIS-related tasks and projects.
  • Participates in fieldwork to gather and verify geographic data as needed which may include exposure to drone based data collection.
  • Performs data quality control and ensures data accuracy and completeness.

Key Accountabilities

  • Complies with all policies, procedures and confidentiality requirements or obligations, including those inherent in this position, effective as a result of employment with Rayburn. 
  • Timely shares complete information with others including Rayburn management and staff, contractors, and other third parties, as required.
  • Delegates jobs and tasks, as approved by supervisor, to appropriate employees, providing complete information and resources to properly complete such jobs and tasks.
  • Timely provides Rayburn management with complete reports on work and tasks performed as such reports are requested or required.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor or executive management.

Job Specifications / Skills Required

Education:

  • Actively pursuing a degree or certification program in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred

Skills:

  • Experience with the fundamentals of GIS and with the ArcGIS suite of products is preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment; willing to assist others
  • Ability to carry out a variety of activities which require a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

Physical Demands 

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time at a computer workstation.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions in order to use a computer keyboard, mouse, etc.
  • Ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
