Habitat Field Crew | Fall 2024 Work Study Restoration Technician

Work Study Position:

Student workers will primarily be assisting The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment with aquatic habitat restoration efforts on the San Marcos river in compliance with the Edwards Aquifer Habitat Conservation Plan. There may also be opportunities to assist with our UAV flight operations and post-processing of imagery, or to help on extra projects unrelated to the San Marcos EAHCP. These various projects are highly team-oriented; thus any potential candidates must be able to work in both large or small groups while effectively completing tasks associated with each.

Field interviews will be conducted in the San Marcos River for qualified applicants, and the pay for this position starts at $12/hr for undergraduates ($15/hr for graduate) but may be subject to increase if preferred qualifications are met. The ability to gain $0.50/semester based will be based on performance evaluations and the end of each semester.

Direct Supervisor: Thomas Heard

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with grant management needs: fulfilling contract deliverables, contract reporting, grant applications, etc
  • Removal of non-native aquatic vegetation
  • Coordination and organization with Meadows Center personnel on volunteer events
  • Work in small group and individual settings responsibly
  • Aid in field work for other research projects as needed
  • All other duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements:

  • Must be able to swim competently
  • Must be able to kayak competently
  • Must be comfortable working in water for long periods of time in variable weather\
  • Able to stay on task while working in a group or independently
  • Capable of repeatedly lifting 50lbs
  • Must be dependable and able to self-motivate

Preferred Qualifications:

  • SCUBA certified
  • Knowledge of local aquatic flora
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and ArcMap
  • Biology Majors (including Aquatic& Wildlife) and Natural Resource Majors preferred

Scheduled Hours:

TBD based on the applicant's schedule, must have the ability to work 12-16hrs/week. Our field shifts (2 per day) occur from 8AM-12PM and 12:30PM-4:00PM Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters, applicants must be available for the full duration of each shift they are scheduled due to off campus field work logistics.

 *It is of upmost importance that you are a capable swimmer and are comfortable in the water

 *Due to the nature of field work, applicants must have availability for the entire duration of either AM or PM shift or your application will automatically be declined.
