Transportation Intern – Freight Planning

The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking an Intern to support the maintenance, enhancement and implementation of the freight planning program. Tasks will generally include technical and/or administrative support to freight planning projects and programs. Problem-solving and critical-thinking skills are essential to this position. Ideal candidates should attend school in the Dallas-Fort Worth region and be able to work at least 20 hours per week while attending school.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Entering, updating and maintaining planning data
  • Assisting with quality control checks on database inputs
  • Assisting with the analysis of projects identified in Freight North Texas
  • Assisting with data collection tasks as directed by supervisor
  • Assisting staff and providing support for the Department subcommittees, including scheduling regular/cyclical meetings, developing agendas, and preparing handouts
  • Responding to information inquiries as directed by supervisor
  • Assisting with the creation and maintenance of ESRI Geographic Information System (GIS) maps, database tables, and reports
  • Drafting for supervisor review, both written and email correspondence

Required Skills

  • Good data-entry skills
  • Working knowledge of ESRI GIS software
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Good communication, both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills, with ability to listen to and follow instructions, coordinate with other team members, and present ideas
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

Required Education and Experience

  • Must be attending an accredited college or university in a degree-seeking program during employment.
  • No work experience required

Starting Salary

Minimum of $16.00 per hour
