Wildlife and Animal Caretaker

Description: Wildlife and Animal Caretakers are responsible for providing the highest quality of care for a wide variety of native Texas and non-native avian, mammal, and reptile species, in addition to domesticated farmed and companion animals. A caretaker can expect to work 40-50 hours per week, depending on the season, and hours will include day and evening shifts, weekends, and holidays. Tasks will include daily animal care, health monitoring, habitat maintenance and record keeping.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

- Complete Animal Caretaking shifts at the Kendalia location, maintaining high standards of care.
- Ensure the health and well-being of all animals, reporting any abnormalities to the Vet Staff or Hospital Manager.
- Feed animals according to dietary guidelines and schedules.
- Maintain cleanliness in enclosures and cages at all times.
- Monitor animal health and report observations to the Vet Staff.
- Administer medications as directed by the treatment plan.
- Assist with facility maintenance, landscaping, repairs, and transportation of animals.
- Adhere to protocols for admitting animals and complete all necessary paperwork promptly.
- Represent WRR professionally to the public and maintain knowledge of WRR policies.
- Mentor volunteers & interns to uphold care standards.

Requirements:

1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a two or four-year degree in Animal Science, Zoology or Biology is a major plus.

2. Two years of full-time animal care experience preferred, with exposure to native and non-native Texas wildlife, and domesticated species a plus

3. Physical stamina and strength, with the ability to lift heavy objects and perform manual labor for extended periods; mature individuals with the ability to handle physically and emotionally stressful situations, a demanding workload, long hours, and to work independently or as a team.

4. Applicants should possess a strong personal work ethic, positive attitude, and have a high level of integrity.

5. Applicants must be dependable and willing to learn and do what is needed so that the animals are given the best quality of life possible in our sanctuary.

6. Meningitis, Tetanus and rabies pre-exposure vaccinations are required during the first several months of employment. Negative TB test also required.

7. Good driving record
