GIS INTERN

FLSA STATUS:               Intern

REPORTS TO:              GIS Manager

WORK LOCATION:      New Braunfels, Texas 

PAY RANGE:                $15.00-$20.00 per hour depending on experience

SUMMARY

The GIS Intern duties and responsibilities include the collection, digitization, review and processing of spatial data, preparation of map exhibits and other GIS information products, and assistance with the maintenance of GIS databases. Opportunities may be available to aide in creation of a GIS data catalog and Story Maps that provide GIS guidance, training, and information for internal staff. This position will work with the GIS team to support agency Enterprise GIS tasks, as well as various internal users from multiple departments (Engineering, Utility Operations, Environmental Science, etc) to ensure that GBRA’s GIS needs are met on a day-to-day basis.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Spatial data development, attribute population, data maintenance;
  • Review new or existing data for accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness;
  • Generate land parcel boundaries from metes and bounds legal descriptions;
  • Georeference and digitize data from static sources, such as as-built plans, surveys, plat maps, master plans, aerial images or historical maps;
  • Georeference CAD drawing data and convert to GIS;
  • Assist with maintaining an up-to-date GIS database of GBRA linear assets infrastructure;
  • Prepare utility engineering map exhibits, parcel and tract maps;
  • Create maps and other GIS information products to industry cartographic standards;
  • Collection of data for field operations using mobile devices/GPS technology (Esri Field Maps, Arrow Gold GPS);
  • Assist with development of GIS data inventory and catalog;
  • Develop Esri Story Maps for internal audience;
  • Create and document procedures and metadata definitions;
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Understand existing and emerging GIS technologies and their application;
  • Working knowledge of ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro 3.2 and ArcGIS for Desktop 10.8.2 or higher;
  • Strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgement, and responsibility;
  • Ability to research, troubleshoot and find appropriate training to learn new technology;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS 

Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university is required.
