Student Support Services Advisor - TRIO SSS

Summary

This position is to advise and motivate students by providing personalized career, education, and financial assistance to low-income, first-generation students, and students with disabilities. Assist program participants with transfer information and completion requirements.

 

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Advisor is a grant funded position.

Travel between campuses and off-site locations may be required.

 

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Conduct classroom, formal, and informal presentations through First Year Experience seminars, college prep courses, and student organization meetings to recruit program eligible students.
  • Update and maintain program website and social media platforms through content creators and learning management systems to inform program participants of activities and events.
  • Develop and distribute program informational materials to eligible students and external departments through print and digital media to inform the college community about program benefits and services.
  • Reviews and evaluates program eligible student applications through individual interviews to determine student eligibility and identify personal needs.
  • Monitor student academic progress through Annual Needs Assessments, Mid Term Grade Reports, Annual Individual Academic Service Plans, and individual contact logs to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Serve as the “Advisor of Record” for program participants by providing academic, financial, and personal guidance through individual appointment and group workshops to guide major selection and degree planning.
  • Refer students to academic support and tutoring services through establish channels of communication to enhance academic performance.
  • Prepares second-year students for graduation and/or transfer through individualized advising, group campus tours, and transfer workshops to facilitate transition from one level of education to another.
  • Personalize career exploration and planning tools through career interest assessments, counseling, panels, and workshops to educate, inform, and identify career pathways.
  • Coordinate cultural and college trips for students in order to expose students to 4-year institutions and activities that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to
  • Other duties as assigned. Responsibilities and duties may change based on the need of the department and the institution.

 

Required Education:

Bachelor’s degree.

 

Required Experience:


1-2 years of experience of appropriate and relevant professional experience working in a TRIO federal program or similar related program for disadvantaged and at-risk college students.

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in verbal and oral communication, Microsoft Office, virtual learning systems, and database management.
  • Knowledge of assessment and data collection, learning styles and learning assistance strategies; experience in a coaching approach to student assistance; experience providing accommodation services to students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of academic advising and college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy activities and related services for SSS Eligible Students.
  • Experience advising and assisting SSS Eligible Students with the transfer to four-year university/college admissions and financial aid process.
  • Ability to effectively maintain a caseload of Participants and provide them with documented services and activities.
  • Knowledge of barriers to postsecondary education faced by low income and potential first-generation college students.
  • Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting Participants.

Continued employment contingent upon continued grant funding. Travel between campuses and off-site locations may be required.
