This position is an entry-level, professional, current planning position which requires a high level of detail and technical expertise for the review, interpretation, and implementation of local codes, ordinances, and plans to facilitate the efficient growth of the community. Requires effective communication and collaboration with the development community and outside organizations, city staff, including management, and the general public.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Effectively interprets and applies state, county, and local codes, ordinances, and regulations related to development.
  • Effectively and efficiently reviews zoning, subdivision, site development, and public infrastructure plans for completeness and compliance with the Comprehensive Plan, Unified Development Code, city ordinances, and the Local Government Code. Ensure comprehensive review and all timelines are maintained.
  • Effectively utilizes permit tracking software in accordance with department requirements.
  • Effectively dissects complicated information and delivers in a clear and concise manner for peers and the public to understand. Practices complete communication through active listening and establishes empathy to concerns.
  • Prepares and delivers professional staff reports and public presentations to the Board of Adjustment, Planning and Zoning Commission, and assists with City Council preparation. Assist with preparing for all public meetings as needed.
  • Facilitates and actively attends pre-application conferences including preparation, notes, and follow up as needed.
  • Assists with the implementation of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, as needed.
  • Coordinates with external agencies, including but not limited to CAMPO, CAPCOG, and Travis County, as needed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements:

Formal Education: Bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning, or a related field.
Relatable Work Experience: None required.
Training, Licenses, or Certifications: Valid Class C Texas driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications: Internship with a local government in planning is preferred.

Disclaimer: Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is define as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
