Position Dates: April 1, 2024 - 9/29/24 (26 weeks)

About Us: The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country. 

Program Description: This intern will work alongside the paddle program coordinator at Big Thicket to create new programming geared towards underserved communities in the southeast Texas area. These programs will partner with local community pools to bring a kayak or a canoe to a pool for a community day for people to learn how to paddle in the pool and then provide interpretive paddle programs during the summer on Big Thicket creeks. First, introducing paddling in a controlled environment allows visitors to get comfortable before being on moving water. This position will develop new programs, work with NPS rangers and paddle volunteers, and present paddle programs to the public.

Member Benefits:

  • Living allowance: $600 per week
  • One-time relocation travel: $1,100.00
  • Intern housing provided by the partner. Three bedroom, shared home in a remote location with mainly dirt country roads to access the house. A/C, laundry facility, full kitchen, furnished, dormitory-style rooming. Wi-Fi, and landline provided, no cable. Commute is about 15-20 minutes north of the Visitor Center where CVA will be working. Home is located within the preserve and is about 20-30 minutes from the nearest grocery store. There will be a possibility of roommates during the length of the internship.
  • This position qualifies for an AmeriCorps Education Award; the estimated AmeriCorps Award amount is $3,247.50.

It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

Intern personal vehicle required for personal travel

Additional Information:
Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member. This includes:

  • Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States;
  • Being at least 18 years or older;
  • Having a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.
