Student Office Assistant-Work Study (Fall 2023)

As a student worker in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, you will be responsible for supporting and assisting office staff, faculty, as well as students. You will report directly to Mrs. Eliamar Farias, Administrative Assistant III, as well as Ms. Margaret Motomochi, Academic Budget Specialist.

As a student worker, you will be given the opportunity for professional development. Being exposed to a professional office environment will give you much-needed skills you can apply to your future career no matter what field you go into. Some of these skills include effective communication, collaboration, teamwork, leadership and a good work ethic. As much as we expect you to help us, we are also here to help support and train you!

Expected job duties:
  • Provide administrative assistance to faculty, staff and students
  • Make copies of exams and course work
  • Deliver errands around campus
  • Shred documents in large quantities
  • Provide excellent customer service to all callers and route all calls to the appropriate person/office
  • Distribute mail delivered to our office
  • Maintain and inventory office supplies
  • Keep track of and enter your time for approval through SAP correctly and in a timely matter
  • Empty our office recycling bin and call for pick up when full
  • Schedule package pick-ups through FedEx
  • Assist with building support (moving equipment, furniture, etc.)
  • Understand and be able to explain basic registration issues students will be frequently calling about and know how to direct them
  • Misc. projects from staff or faculty

Preferred qualifications:
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Teams
  • Ability to comfortably do semi-frequent lifting of items that can weigh around/up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be comfortable with walking around campus in the heat/cold/rain
  • Ability to manage yourself and assign yourself tasks that need attending to
  • Ability to work well in both fast and slow paced environments
  • Organizational skills - very important
  • Ability to send professionally-written emails
  • Punctuality

Other Considerations:
  • This position will require you to work in the Chemistry BLDG, room 238 main office
  • Successful workers selected for this position may also be considered for continued employment throughout your time as a student at Texas State

This position is available only to approved work-study students. It is open to all majors except Chemistry and Biochemistry majors, or other majors that will require you to have many classes in Chemistry or Biochemistry. This is due to of the frequent handling of course exams while making copies for faculty.

We will work with and be very flexible with your course schedule and allow short shifts in between classes. Our office is open M-F 8:00am - 5:00pm. You will not work weekends. The amount of working hours you receive each week is based on your availability, but it will never be over the max of 25 hours per week.
