Fall Surgical Product Development Co-Op Engineer

The Enovis Co-Op program requires a commitment to 3 alternating Co-Op periods/semesters (Fall 2023, Summer 2024 and Spring 2025) in the Austin Texas office.
The Engineering Co-op will work within one of the different orthopedic product segments of our Surgical Division (hip, knee, shoulder, advanced technologies and testing) and will assist the product development engineering teams with all aspects of the team projects. This includes working with a cross-functional product team consisting of upper-level product development engineers, test engineers, marketing product managers, manufacturing engineers, regulatory and QA engineers in the design, development, and testing of surgical instruments and implants. 
Ideal candidate is sophomore undergraduate seeking a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participates as an active member of the New Product Development Team:
  • Assists to identify surgeon requirements and product characteristics.
  • Assists Product Development Engineers to create product designs using 3D modeling
  • Assist with testing, prototyping and test program development/documentation
  • Assists with design documentation, verification and final dossier
  • Confers with cross-function teams to complete project tasks
  • Manages plastic 3D printer lab, becomes an expert in implementing designs for 3D printer.
  • Participates in surgeon symposia, focus groups and KOL (Key Opinion Leader) meetings.
  • Attends cadaveric labs for design validation and learning purposes.
  • Works under immediate and heavy supervision.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
Shared Responsibilities as a Development Team member:

  • Works with marketing and customer to develop conceptual designs, typically in the form of SLA models or metal prototypes of the product and present those designs back to customer for evaluation.
  • Maintains all documentation necessary for a Design History File (DHF), including Design Input Documents, Design Validation Plans/Reports, Test Protocols/Reports, and Design Input/Output Matrix.
  • Develops project plans using appropriate planning software and periodically report on the progress of the project to upper management.
  • Develops detail engineering drawings, CAD modeling and release through ECO system.
  • Works through internal prototype shop or contract through vendor on developing prototypes.
  • Schedules and directs product team meetings as needed in absence of PD engineer; assuring timeliness of project execution.
  • Maintains existing product lines and writes ECOs for general product improvement.

Education/Experience:

  • Must complete at least first two years of engineering school and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
  • Working on completion of BS in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering with mechanical track emphasis, or equivalent. 
  • Extreme interest in medical devices and/or orthopedics is required.
  • Experience with 3D modeling, physical prototyping and subtractive manufacturing desired.
