Aquarium Technician | Spring 2022 Work Study

General Description
Responsible for the daily care and maintenance of a commercial aquarium designed to communicate the unique aquatic habitats of the Edwards Artesian Aquifer and its spring systems. 
 
Example of Duties
  • Maintain Spring Lake’s aquarium displays by daily inspection, routine cleanings, feeding, and water quality monitoring.
  • Inspect and maintain filtration, chillers, and UV sterilizers on aquariums.
  • Removal and treatment of any sick or injured fish.
  • Collection and acquisition of new specimens.
  • Knowledge of plumbing aquariums with external filtration.
  • Perform other duties assigned.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 
Knowledge of: Safe SCUBA diving and skin diving practices; rules and regulations regarding the possession of endangered species; aquarium systems, design and function; university policies and procedures; ecology of the Edward’s Aquifer and Guadalupe Blanco river basin; pump, thermal controls, filtration systems and aeration systems.
Skill in: Diagnosing necessary equipment repairs, identifying and treating sick and injured fish, interacting courteously with a variety of people, basic plumbing, fish handling and transporting
Ability to: Read manuals, work schedules, operated aquarium filtration, receive certification to dive in Spring Lake, SCUBA dive in tight spaces, perform preventative maintenance.
