Job Title: Facilities GIS Student Intern

Location: Texas State University - Facilities Department, San Marcos, TX

Duration: Full academic year, August 17, 2026 - May 14, 2027

Hours: 15-20 hours per week; flexible around class schedule

Compensation: $11.50/hour

The intern will be paid $11.50/hour through the duration of the internship. If a continuation opportunity is available, a pay rate increase may be discussed based on performance, departmental needs, available funding, and continued eligibility.

Position/Organization Overview and Internship Benefits:

Texas State University Facilities is seeking a motivated student intern to support the growing use of Geographic Information Systems across Facilities operations. Texas State University Facilities provides responsive services that support the university's teaching, research, and operational missions. The department manages campus facilities and infrastructure while promoting safety, sustainability, responsible resource management, and effective stewardship of the university's physical environment. This position assists with day-to-day GIS tasks that support mapping, data maintenance, map production, field verification, and broader Facilities initiatives. It is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in GIS, geography, planning, engineering, facilities, or spatial data management to gain hands-on experience with real-world campus infrastructure and operational data. Continuation beyond the undergraduate internship period may be available for students who pursue graduate study, subject to performance, departmental needs, available funding, and continued eligibility.

Intern Responsibilities:

Assist with routine updates and maintenance of GIS data layers and attribute information.

Support utility GIS data entry, editing, and verification using established workflows.

Help produce maps, figures, exhibits, and other standard GIS deliverables.

Perform digitizing, feature cleanup, and basic geospatial editing in ArcGIS Pro.

Assist with organizing GIS project files, field photos, CAD references, and related documentation.

Conduct basic QA/QC checks for missing data, duplicate entries, and common data issues.

Support recurring updates to dashboards, reports, and related GIS products.

Assist with field data collection and field verification efforts, including photo documentation and location checks.

Help prepare and organize data that supports Facilities initiatives related to utilities, asset management, and space management.

Maintain logs, naming conventions, and documentation for recurring GIS tasks.

In this role, interns will learn how to:

Support operational GIS workflows in a professional university Facilities environment.

Apply GIS tools and procedures to utility mapping, campus data maintenance, and field verification tasks.

Work with real projects involving utilities, assets, buildings, infrastructure, and space management.

Use ArcGIS Pro and related GIS applications to create and maintain spatial data products.

Apply quality assurance and quality control procedures to operational data.

Document technical work and communicate project results in a professional setting.

Understand how GIS supports facilities planning, maintenance, construction, and campus operations.

Feedback/Evaluation Process:

Bi-weekly meetings with supervisors will support continuous growth and alignment with learning objectives. Additionally, at the end of the term, the intern will prepare a final presentation or report for the Facilities team. Open communication throughout the experience is encouraged for maximum benefit.

Supervisor Details:

This position will be directly supervised by Ben Buehler, who provides expertise in the GIS field. The supervisor will guide and teach the intern throughout the internship and verify worked hours.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing.

Expected graduation date of May 2027 or later; students pursuing a graduate degree after completion of their undergraduate program may be eligible for continued employment, subject to departmental needs and continued eligibility.

Preferred academic areas of interest include GIS, geography, planning, engineering, environmental science, computer applications, facilities management, or a related field.

Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.

Basic computer skills, including file management and spreadsheet use.

Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and communicate clearly with supervisors.

Availability to work approximately 15-20 hours per week during the full academic year.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro or other GIS software.

Coursework or experience related to GIS, CAD, mapping, or spatial data.

Interest in campus infrastructure, utilities, facilities operations, or asset management.

Experience with data entry, map creation, or technical documentation.

Availability to continue working after graduation while pursuing a graduate degree.
