Position Overview | General Description

Responsible for assisting and supporting Student Involvement & Engagement to promote student success through leadership, development, service, volunteering opportunities, student organizations and community-wide events. Specifically, the Graduate Assistant for Operations and Assessment supports campus access, departmental assessments, development of operations and protocols, marketing and communications, event planning, and other duties as assigned. Graduate Assistant reports to Associate Director for Operations and Assessments and supports department. 

 

Learning Objectives

  • Acquire knowledge of the operational and assessment functions of a Student Involvement and Engagement department.
  • Understand university policies and procedures related to event planning, campus access, university-sanctioned activities with and without student travel, and marketing and communications.
  • Gain knowledge of event planning and assist with planning large-scale signature events hosted by the Student Involvement and Engagement department.
  • Learn how to use the department’s data-driven online platform (Bobcat Organization Hub) to facilitate the department’s operations and assessment process and procedures.

 

Primary Responsibilities | Job Duties 

  • Support the facilitation of university policies and procedures related to Campus Access including outdoor requests, amplified sound, solicitation and non-university vendors, temporary structures and exhibits, posting of literature and banners, and information tables.
  • Assist in facilitating the university policies and departmental procedures for university-sanctioned activities with and without student travel.
  • Support the assessment and evaluation of the department’s programs and services and contribute to regular reports with appropriate recommendations.
  • Contribute to the development, coordination, and implementation of departmental programs and services.
  • Promote departmental, divisional, and University-wide programs calendars of programs and services. 
  • Support marketing and communication of programs and services through websites, social media, fairs, presentations or workshops, and in-person meetings.
  • Facilitate general administrative duties for the department, including front office coverage, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Enrollment in a graduate degree program at Texas State University.
  • Enrollment in nine (9) graduate hours each long semester and maintenance of a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • Conditional acceptance into the Graduate College at Texas State is permissible.
  • Experience with evaluations and assessments.
  • Experience with facilitating operations and protocols.
  • Experience with event planning and program management.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams), Zoom, and social media platforms.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to graduate students enrolled in degrees in education and social sciences.
  • At least one (1) year experience with programs and services related to student engagement, retention, persistence, and graduation. 
  • Knowledge of higher education and student development theories and practices. 
  • Skills in clear and concise email, in-person, and phone communications; teamwork; problem-solving and decision-making; evaluation and assessment; critical-thinking; event planning; and website content management.
  • Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures, instructions, reports, and advertising; prepare budget; manage several complex tasks at one time. 
  • Ability to work with and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff, students and community members.
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate degree of confidentiality.
  • Know and use referral sources and skills to support students seeking expert assistance (e.g. other offices, academic or support services, outside agencies, etc.).

 

Terms of Employment

  • Average of 20 hours worked per week (unless otherwise approved by department director).
  • Dates of employment: July 6 – May 30
  • 12-month appointment with opportunity to renew for a second year. Appointment ending in May of second year (unless discussed with supervisor).
  • Available to work evenings and weekends.
  • Programs may require travel to Texas State University Round Rock Campus.
  • No paid vacation, sick leave, or university-observed holidays.
  • Graduate Assistant may participate in professional activities at the local, state, and regional level.

 

Salary

  • Monthly stipend received at the beginning of each month.
  • Average of $ 1,371.45/monthly (first year of employment).
  • Average of $ 1,406.53/monthly (second year of employment).

 

Hiring Process 

  • Department will participate in the hiring process outlined by the Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) program.
  • Position will be posted via Handshake and offered to all current/continuing graduate students at Texas State University.
  • The interview process will continue until the position is filled.
