Fall 2026 Intern - Platform Prototype Development

This internship is a hands-on mechanical engineering opportunity focused on the design and development of a showcase prototype enclosure for next-generation intelligent storage platforms.

The selected candidate will help design and fabricate a custom transparent enclosure/display system that highlights key electronic and compute components used in advanced data center storage systems. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design a show display prototype enclosure for an advanced intelligent storage platform.
  • Collaborate with the engineering teams to translate the production design into showcase/demo-ready prototypes.
  • Participate in design reviews and prototype validation activities.
  • Create and modify mechanical designs using SolidWorks.
  • Support prototype fabrication activities including: drilling, routing, cutting, polishing, fastening, and assembly
  • Perform mechanical calculations related to fit, articulation, tolerances, and load-bearing structures
  • Work within the tight timelines needed to achieve this display concept.

This role is part of WD's early career development program. The responsibilities of this role are typically aligned with candidates who have approximately 0–2+ years of relevant professional experience, though candidates of all experience levels are encouraged to apply.

 

Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Right to work in the US without requiring Western Digital to commence or sponsor an immigration case in order to employ you at any point in the future required.
  • Experience using SolidWorks, CAD, or similar 3D modeling tools
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable working in a lab, prototype, or fabrication environment
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Self-starter with strong initiative and eagerness to learn
  • Program management an advantage
