Position: Summer 2026 Internship – Historic Sites, Adena Mansion and Gardens
Type: Unpaid Internship
Schedule: Part-time, unpaid thirteen-week position starting on Monday, May 11 and ending Friday, August 7, 2026
Notes on Schedule: Monday -Friday 9:00am – 4:30pm - hours to be determined, flexible with student's schedule.
Location: 847 Adena Road Chillicothe, OH 45601
Reports to: Site Management

About Ohio History Connection:
The Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio's stories. Chartered in 1885, the OHC carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state's history. This includes housing the state historic preservation office, the official state archives, local history office and managing more than 50 sites and museums across Ohio.
Summary:
Adena Mansion and Gardens is seeking college and university students to help care for and interpret this amazing site. Interns may participate in several ways: gardening, educational or interpretive programming, special events assistance, and other roles.
Essential Functions:
1. Seasonal gardening and greenhouse operation and maintenance.
2. Docent / tour guide skill development, historical research skill development.
3. General grounds maintenance and historic site preservation.
Required Education, Skills, Experience:
· Must be enrolled in an academic program OR a recent graduate from an academic program (within one year)
· Preferred Majors include Environmental or Historical Education, Horticulture, Resource Management.
Required Competencies:
· Works well both independently and with and in support of colleagues to complete work.
· Demonstrates a potential to communicate well in written and verbal communications, including informal mediums like email and meetings.
· Must be willing to work outdoors and perform tasks safely.
Other Requirements:
· Must complete internship onboarding appointment, including a background check
· Must create and account, log internships hours and sign up for internship shifts via Track It Forward
· Must present at the summer internship summit
· Must attend professional development opportunities and meetings when requested
Education and Experience Outcomes:
1. Understand gardening techniques and greenhouse operation.
2. Develop docent / tour guide skills, develop historical research skills.
3. Experience in grounds maintenance and historic site preservation.
4. Trail development and grounds maintenance techniques.
5. Customer service skill development.
