Student Communications Admin | Science Communications Program

The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University is dedicated to inspiring research, leadership, and innovation that ensures clean, abundant water for the environment and all humanity. The Meadows Center fulfills its mission by integrating activities across four pillars of action in powerful ways. Our work in each of these pillars begins at Spring Lake – one of the largest artesian springs in the world – and ripples outward across Texas and beyond.

 

The Meadows Center is seeking a work-study eligible student to support the Science Communications team in email marketing and communications administration tasks. This position is designed as a learning opportunity for students interested in science communication, digital media, and communications administration. Students gain hands-on experience in email marketing, content coordination, and digital asset management within a supportive, collaborative team environment.

 

General Description

Responsible for assisting the Digital Media Specialist and Science Communications Manager with all aspects of the asset management library and email marketing. This position will work on the second floor of Spring Lake Hall and handle file organization, website asset management, and email marketing and newsletters for the Center.

 

Schedule

Applicants must be available during the times of 8:00 am -5:00 pm Mon – Fri, with a minimum of 3-hour blocks per scheduled shift. Morning or afternoon shifts are preferred. Employees are required to work between 10-15 hours per week.

 

Job Requirements 

  • Must be able to work 10-15 hrs/week
  • Must have experience working in an office setting
  • Must have great customer service skills, be self-motivated, and have a willingness to learn
  • Must be proficient in Outlook, Word, Teams, and Excel.
  • Must be proficient in MailChimp
  • Experience with Canva and Adobe design software preferred.
  • Must have a reliable method of getting to work. A Texas State Parking Pass is required if you plan to drive to work.
  • Must provide resume, school schedule, cover letter, and portfolio (if available — class projects are welcome). 

 

 

Job Duties

  • Support the administrative needs of the Science Communications program, including asset library and file management
  • Draft, format, and schedule email newsletters and announcements
  • Maintain and segment contact lists in our email marketing platform
  • Track and report on email performance metrics (open rates, click-through rates, engagement)
  • Assist in developing content for newsletters, blog posts, and social media
  • Help update website content as needed
  • Support event promotions and donor communications
  • Ensure brand and style consistency across communications
  • Provide general administrative support to the communications team
  • Assist with graphic design or content creation if skills allow
  • Learn about Spring Lake and The Meadows Center’s educational goals
  • All other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree or coursework in Marketing, Business Administration, Graphic Design, Computer Science, Communications, or a related field
  • Familiarity with digital file and asset organization/management
  • Familiarity with Meta Business Suite, LinkedIn, and MailChimp preferred
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Passion for environmental issues is a plus!

 

Preferred Academic Background

  • Junior or Senior student (Bachelor’s) or Graduate student in Marketing, Business Administration, Graphic Design, Computer Science, Communications, or related field
  • Completion of (or current enrollment in) at least one course in email and social media marketing or related coursework
  • Graphic design experience is a plus.

 

Location

Students driving their vehicles to work must have a Texas State parking permit. Students without a vehicle must have a reliable method of getting to work. Students may utilize the Bobcat Shuttle Route 23 - Post Road. The bus stop is located at the main entrance of The Meadows Center. 

 

Employee Evaluation Process

Employees will be evaluated on their work output and ethics. Employees will be required to attend all scheduled shifts unless prior communication has been made with their direct supervisor. All employees are required to follow university policy and procedures.

 

Pay Rate Determination 

The pay rate for this position begins at $11. Experience and amount result in a higher rate if deemed appropriate by the Science Communications Program.

The Digital Media Specialist for the Science Communications team directly supervises this position.
