Seasonal Recreation Instructor

What we’re looking for:  A motivated and collaborative individual to join the Parks and Recreation Department at the Fischer Park Nature Education Center. Under general supervision, collaborates with Supervisors in coordinating recreation programs to ensure customer satisfaction and safety for employees, clients and visitors at Parks and Recreation Department facilities and programs.

The responsibilities you’ll be trusted with: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

Assists in ensuring the delivery of high quality and consistent recreation programs and services.

Collaborates to plan, organize, promote, facilitate, and instruct recreation programs as approved by the Fischer Park Nature Education Center Supervisors in a safe condition and to meet community needs; coordinated in alignment with the City’s strategic objectives, policies and procedures, and State and Federal laws.

Maintains attendance and class records, including but not limited to program and participant surveys, accident /incident reports, monitors course enrollment and reports deficiencies in inventory of supplies to supervisor.

Answers incoming calls and provides recreation program information in person and via the telephone; greets guests and provides prompt, courteous and friendly customer services to the public, in order to maintain positive customer relations.

Sells merchandise and assists in maintaining displays and inventory.  Facilitates the use of rental equipment by patrons including kayaks and lifejackets.

Handles minor disciplinary issues or policy interpretation according to Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedures.

Assists in coordinating special events, including event setup and tear down.

Assists in managing a variety of administrative activities including computer records and cash management; operate computer registration/reservation system.

Substitutes for personnel throughout the Parks and Recreation Department as needed.

Maintains facility cleanliness and is active in presenting a clean, comfortable and safe environment; responsible for reporting potential and existing safety issues or concerns to supervisors to ensure patron safety.

Performs other duties as assigned or required.

 

Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND one (1) year customer service/public interaction experience required, with recreation or athletic instruction experience preferred.

 

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.

Must possess or be able to obtain within six months of employment: Community First Aid and Safety/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.

Must possess or be able to obtain within six months of employment: Basic Water Rescue or equivalent certification.

Required Knowledge of:

Operational characteristics, services and activities of informal nature education instruction, outdoor events and various recreational programming.

Principles and practices of customer service.

Federal and State safety laws and regulations.

Required Skill in:

Interpreting customer and facility needs and solving customer service and public relations issues.

Analyzing problems, providing alternatives, and identifying solutions in support of established goals.

Responding to emergencies and determining corrective actions using available resources.

Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with City employees, facility lessees and guests, event sponsors and vendors, and the general public.  

Operating and maintaining a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software and communications equipment.

Effective, clear and concise communication, both verbally and in writing.

 

Your Work Environment: 

Work is performed in an office environment; outdoors in all weather conditions, with potential exposure to hazardous chemicals; is subject to sitting, standing, bending and reaching for extended periods of time; and must be able to safely pull, push, lift and carry items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

Must be able to work irregular hours including weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings.

May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.
