Captionist | Disability Services

Department: Disability Services at Texas State is recruiting applicants for part-time positions as a classroom captionist. 

 

Job Summary: 

The primary role of a captionist is to provide accurate, real-time transcription in the classroom for deaf or hard-of-hearing students, ensuring equal access to all instructional materials. Using a laptop equipped with a word expansion program, the captionist transcribes spoken communication from instructors and students.

This role demands a high degree of flexibility, adaptability, and typing stamina within a dynamic classroom environment. A strong commitment to meeting students' diverse communication needs and preferences is essential, ensuring inclusive and effective learning experiences for all.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Preferred typing speed of 65 wpm. Candidates will be evaluated for accuracy and consistency during the second round of in-house screening.

Required qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in 6 or more credit hours during Fall and Spring semesters
  • Demonstrate exceptional listening skills
  • Possess strong knowledge of the English language and grammar
  • Ability to paraphrase effectively
  • Able to sustain typing for 25 minutes while working with a co-captionist
  • Able to sustain typing for 1.5 hours while working without a co-captionist, as needed

 

Pay Rate: $13.00 per hour

 

Direct Supervisor: Interpreter Coordinator

 

Work Schedule:  Working hours range from 8 AM-9:30 PM, with the greatest need between 12:30 PM- 3:30 PM. Students in this position are eligible to work up to 25 hours per week.

 

Payrate Determination: The pay rate for student captionist is carefully decided by the department director, ensuring alignment with the university's pay rate guidelines.

 

Employee Evaluation Process: Student employees are evaluated by the interpreter coordinator and captioning assistant at the end of each long semester.
