Position Title: NPS Historic Preservation Training Center – Build Up Junior Project Specialist – AmeriCorps

Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements

Site Location: Washington, D.C.

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: 3/16/2026
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 900 hours, 26 weeks

 

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

 

STE in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals for an exciting new opportunity as a HPTC Build Up Junior Project Specialist. The goal of this position is to provide a technical internship that facilitates the opportunity to learn the full scope of HPTC project management.

 

HPTC utilizes historic preservation projects as the main vehicle for teaching preservation philosophy and building crafts, technology, and project management skills. Our experiential learning approach emphasizes flexibility in addressing the unknown conditions encountered during the project and ensures that the goals of preservation are met.

 

Interns in this position will be exposed to both design and construction management projects. Additionally, they will receive safety training for construction and learn how to use software programs related to project management and cost estimating.

 

Description of Duties:

  • MS Project
  • Review project schedules and budgets
  • Create a project schedule using MS Project, including the creation and assigning of resources under the guidance of a senior project leader
  • Learn to make schedule, cost and resources changes in MS Project
  • Project Documentation
  • Produce project agendas, minutes and weekly reports under supervision of senior project manager
  • Work with senior PM to develop project agreements
  • Work with senior PM to review existing project documentation.
  • Construction Management
  • Work as a junior Construction Management Representative (CMR) on simple projects to gain competency as a project manager
  • Perform on-site safety construction inspections under the supervision of a senior PM
  • Review and interpret construction drawings and scope of work to assure that project work remains within scope.
  • Design Contract Management
  • Work with senior PM to review design documents produced by A/E firms
  • Work with in-house design team to produce design and construction documents
  • Work with senior PM to develop cost estimates for contracted design work.

 

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Service Criminal History Check.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental
  • conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
  • Driver’s License & personal transportation will be required to report to job site
  • Very strong communication skills (writing/editing)
  • Very strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Responsibility and time management skills

Time Requirements:
 

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service 
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

 

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • Gain exposure to real-world project management challenges
  • Multiple Trades workshop opportunities provided by HPTC
  • COR II Training

 

Benefits:

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,817.14 
  • $700 weekly, $140 additional weekly benefits (equivalent to $21/hr pre-tax)

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
