Marketing and Communications Graduate Assistant

The Marketing and Communications Graduate Assistant supports The Graduate College’s digital communication, marketing, and outreach initiatives. Working closely with the Publications Writer, this position helps enhance the visibility, accuracy, and effectiveness of The Graduate College’s communications across web, social media, and print. The role contributes to student recruitment, retention, and engagement by assisting with content creation, analytics, website updates, and digital storytelling efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in maintaining and updating The Graduate College website, ensuring content is accurate, visually appealing, user-friendly, and up to date.
  • Apply basic SEO and UX/UI principles to improve website performance and user experience.
  • Support analytics tracking for the website and social media platforms, helping to monitor engagement, traffic, and performance metrics, and assist in reporting insights.
  • Assist in copyediting and writing content for the website, GradBulletin, and other communications.
  • Create marketing materials (e.g., videos, graphics, logos, posters, handouts) for The Graduate College’s initiatives using design/editing tools such as Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of digital communications projects, including outreach to students and faculty to develop feature stories.
  • Copyedit and schedule content for The Graduate College’s social media platforms (Instagram, X/Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) using scheduling tools.
  • Assist with social media moderation, including replies, comments, and messages.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support The Graduate College.

Required Qualifications:

  • Regularly admitted to a graduate degree program at Texas State University
  • Enrolled in nine (9) graduate hours each long semester (fall and spring) and three (3) graduate hours in summer unless exempt
  • Good academic standing
  • Ability to organize written content clearly and maintain strong attention to detail in formatting, layout, and overall readability
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively with others when needed
  • Excellent proofreading skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in communications, digital media, public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism, writing, or a related field
  • Experience with leading social media platforms (i.e., X, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) and social media scheduling tools such as Hootsuite or Sprout Social
  • Experience with web design, UX/UI, SEO best practices, analytics tracking, and content management systems
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and Lightroom, as well as Canva
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms such as Outlook and Mailchimp

Terms of employment:

  • Must be eligible for Graduate Student Employment per UPPS No. 07.07.06.
  • The commitment for this position is 20 hours per week in-office on the San Marcos campus (flexible schedule between Monday and Friday).
  • This position reports to the Publications Writer of The Graduate College.
  • The duration of this position is for the Spring 2026 semester. Continued employment may be considered based on performance and as funding is available. Performance will be evaluated each semester by the Publications Writer. 
  • The salary is determined by the University Pay Plan for a Graduate Assistant position. 
  • When the university/office is closed on weekends/holidays, students will not be working.

Work Environment:

Physical requirements include the ability to operate computers, telephones, and standard office equipment; to sit, stand, walk, and engage in client/customer contact; and to perform repetitive motions, stooping/kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching as needed. The position may also require walking around campus for photography or content collection and occasionally lifting or carrying light equipment up to 10–15 pounds.
