Budget Fellow

Pay Range: $20.00/hr. Part-time during school year

Workdays & Hours: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm

  • Up to 19 hours per week from January through May (during the school year) between Monday – Friday at 8 AM to 5 PM.
  • The opportunity to work full time for 3 months directly after graduation between Monday – Friday at 8 AM to 5 PM

The FWLab is a new initiative commissioned by City Manager David Cooke in February 2023 in support of Fort Worth's organizational values and to make government better. The work undertaken by the FWLab advances the City's Vision to "be the most livable and best managed city in the country" through building organizational capacity to explore, analyze and learn from data that is discoverable via existing and new municipal system and components. Specific systems or components of the FWLab include priority-based budgeting, data analytics and management, strategic infrastructure planning, bond program coordination, operational assessments/internal consulting, strategic foresight or futurist studies, departmental strategic planning (FWStat) and Lean Six Sigma.

The FWLab is seeking students to join our budget fellowship program geared toward providing final-year Master of Public Administration students with robust experience in a real-world environment as they finish their degree. The program is a collaboration between the University of North Texas, the Government Finance Officer’s Association and the City of Fort Worth.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Working towards a specialization in a vocational field, High School, Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a related field of study and no previous work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Be in last year of Master of Public Affairs program.
  • Analytical/quantitative coursework and experience with data, writing, research, and communication development highly preferred. Familiarity working with large datasets is a plus.

The Budget Fellow job responsibilities include:

  • Experience rolling out new programs and initiatives alongside seasoned professionals.
  • Learning the inner workings of a Priority-Based Budgeting program.
  • Execution of special analysis projects related to taxation, revenue, capital expenditure and other topics.
  • Trend monitoring and analysis of department operational KPIs and participation in FWStat program meetings.
  • Participation and experience with long-range planning initiatives and public meetings.
  • Interacting with key staff across the organization, including executives.
  • Firsthand experience of large government organization operations.
  • Training and budget decision architecture certification through the GFOA.
  • Opportunities to interact with and support executive staff and cross-functional teams.
  • Facility tours, career mentorship and membership in the City’s Young Professional’s organization.
