Adventure Instructor

Why Your Role Matters

As an Adventure Instructor, you inspire individuals of all ages to experience the great outdoors in a safe, supportive, and fun environment. This role allows you to lead transformative outdoor adventure programs, guiding participants through activities like rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, and team-building challenges. You will play a vital role in fostering teamwork, personal growth, and a deep connection to nature—empowering participants to step out of their comfort zones and discover new strengths in themselves.

Pay Range: $18.00 per hour

How You Make an Impact   

  • Facilitate outdoor adventure activities such as rock climbing, hiking, and team-building exercises, challenging participants to develop new skills and build confidence. 
  • Maintain a high standard of safety for all participants by strictly adhering to safety protocols and providing clear instructions. 
  • Design and lead programs that foster growth, resilience, and teamwork, encouraging participants to push their limits and work together. 
  • Oversee the care and maintenance of adventure equipment, ensuring everything is in top condition for each program. 
  • Provide a positive and engaging experience for all participants, addressing their needs and ensuring they feel supported throughout their involvement in the program. 
  • Demonstrate the YMCA’s values in every interaction, fostering a positive culture and serving as an ambassador of our work to inspire others and strengthen our purpose within the community.  
  • Assist with additional tasks as needed, contributing to the overall success of the program.   

What You Bring to the Y    

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. 
  • Must be at least 18 years old. 
  • 1-2 years of experience working at a camp or in a similar outdoor or adventure setting. 
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required (or ability to obtain upon hire). 
  • Specific certifications may be required depending on the program being led (e.g., climbing, canoeing, ropes course). These certifications should be maintained as part of program requirements. 
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure. 
  • You are a team player—You are a team player with a positive, service-oriented attitude and can work well with others.  
  • You communicate effectively - You listen for understanding and meaning. You speak and write effectively.  
  • You are customer-focused – You build good customer relationships and deliver customer-centric solutions.

Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, hike outdoors in hot temperatures, bend, talk, and occasionally lift and/or move items, including equipment, furniture, and/or children.
