Student Research Assistant

This role is located within the Department of Health and Human Performance. Specifically, this role works with the Care Project, which aims to identify patient-centered solutions to improve continuity of care through a health literary intervention focused on key barriers affecting patient safety and health outcomes, both inpatient and outpatient experiences, thereby reducing hospital readmissions and improving patients’ quality of life.
Job Summary:
This hourly position is open to any undergraduate or graduate student who is currently not receiving compensation with another job at Texas State University. However, the candidate must preferably have an interest in patient-centered care, diabetes prevention and management, healthcare service delivery, social determinants of health-based research, and interested in learning more about qualitative and quantitative research.
The earliest start date is anticipated to be November 2025, and the project will potentially conclude July or August 2026. This tentative timeline will be discussed with the employed student as changes occur.
Job Duties:
The student who is selected to assist Dr. McFadden with this study will also collaborate with the Translational Health Research Center (THRC), Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU DO), and various clinics affiliated with SHSU DO. The student will be asked to complete the following responsibilities:
- Edit IRB protocol as needed
- Conduct literature reviews pertaining to coordination of care, diabetes care, and diabetes prevention and management
- Identify best recruitment efforts to select eligible research participants
- Analyze secondary data to assess key factors related to hospital readmissions
- Collect primary survey data from patients living with diabetes
- Analyze primary data
- Develop report to highlight key findings from secondary data
- Share secondary data report and primary data key findings with THRC staff, SHSU clinicians, residents, and other key stakeholders
- Submit primary data key findings for conference presentation(s) and publication(s)
- Identify funding mechanism(s) and develop/submit grant proposal to develop intervention using pilot data
- Participate in ECHO dissemination series to share findings with clinicians and other stakeholders
- Create patient education materials
On-Campus Job Location: Jowers Center
Supervisor: Ny’Nika T. McFadden, PhD, Assistant Professor of Public Health
Work Schedule: Students in this position are expected to work no more than 20 hours per week, and must be able to work at times during University Hours (Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm).
Payrate Determination: Student research assistant will be paid an hourly rate of $12-$15 per hour depending upon qualifications.
