Wittliff Collections Student Assistant
Job Summary:
The Wittliff Collections is a gallery and archive of Southwestern artwork founded by Bill and Sally Wittliff. We are located on the seventh floor of Alkek Library on the Texas State University campus in San Marcos, Texas. We are looking for a reliable and friendly student worker to provide customer service to patrons and assist Wittliff staff at our galleries. The Wittliff is open Monday-Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Saturday-Sunday 12:30 pm-4:30 pm. On Bobcat Days we will have extended hours.

On-Campus Job Location: The Wittliff Collections, 7th floor of Alkek Library at Texas State University (601 University Dr. San Marcos, Texas 78666)

Employee Evaluation Process: Student employees will be evaluated at the end of each long semester by their direct supervisor
List of Job Duties:
- Open and close galleries: unlocking doors, turning on lights, turning on projectors, computer monitors, music/audio
- Quality assurance: dusting and spot-cleaning as needed, making sure audio/visual components of gallery are working correctly, reporting technical or maintenance issues to supervisors, restocking brochures/maps, taking out recycling/trash, helping maintain security and preservation of exhibition spaces
- Greet and welcome guests to the gallery/collections and answer questions concerning hours, holdings, viewing policies, etc.
- Record patron statistics by keeping a tally of visitors
- Provide tours of the exhibition spaces as needed
- Perform general office duties including answering and transferring calls, taking messages, some data entry, recycling removal, picking up/delivering packages, etc.
- Provide sales assistance for our onsite bookstore
- Assist with events and exhibits, including event set-up and breakdown/clean up, greeting guests, working name tag table, mail-outs, posting event flyers, running audio/visual equipment, taking out trash, cleaning spills, etc.
- Provide additional assistance as needed to The Wittliff’s full-time staff members
Required qualifications:
- Work Study funds for the fall and spring semesters
- Availability to work a minimum of 10-20 hours a week
- Must be able to work periodically on weekends. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required during special events such as exhibit openings, readings, panel discussions, etc.
- Ability to provide professional and friendly service to gallery patrons
- Ability to sit still and quietly entertain yourself for long periods of time
- Willingness and eagerness to learn about the Wittliff, including reading and/or watching content as assigned, maintaining familiarity with our website, participating in tours and events, etc.
Preferred qualifications:
- Retail or other customer service experience
- Familiarity with phone etiquette
- Experience with audio/visual equipment
- Familiarity with Photoshop and other design software, Microsoft Teams, SAP
- Experience creating social media short form videos (Instagram Reels)
- Bilingual – Spanish/English
- Majoring in a Liberal Arts degree such as Art, Design, Photography, English/Spanish, History, Music, Southwestern Studies, etc.
- Knowledge of Southwestern literature, photography, music, etc.
- Artistic talent or creative interest in: design, photography, social media, music, poetry, writing, film, art, video editing, etc.
- Ability to lift 35 lbs (for event set up and take down)
