
Leadership & Service Council
Overview: The Leadership & Service Council (also known as the Council) works under the supervision of the Leadership & Service staff to assist in coordinating leadership development and community service programs and initiatives for Texas State University. Leadership & Service is currently hiring one (1) student worker to be on our SERVE Council for the full academic year.
Student workers under this branch are supervised by the Coordinator for Community Service & Volunteer Programs, Jason Garcia. Aside from supporting overall Leadership & Service programming and initiatives, as well as fulfilling general staff expectations, the SERVE Council’s work primarily focuses on community service and volunteer opportunities. More detailed SERVE Council responsibilities include:
- Facilitating small groups through reflection, pre-trip education, and teambuilding as trip leaders for the Bobcat Break program.
- Coordinate with non-profit organization and community partners to host monthly service projects, while also serving as site leaders.
- Connect with non-profit organizations and community partners to build relationships and create potential partnerships for programming or outreach.
- Support all other Leadership & Service programming, or Student Involvement & Engagement programming, as needed.
General Leadership & Service Council responsibilities include the following:
- Support all Leadership & Service signature programs by assisting with set-up, event management, and tear down
- Attend scheduled 1-on-1 or small team meetings with respective supervisor
- Attend mandatory Leadership & Service staff meetings scheduled and led by the Associate Director or Coordinators
- Maintain weekly office hours, with one evening session scheduled each week
- Visit student organizations, groups, or departments to promote Leadership & Service opportunities and resources
- Mentor 1 first-year student from the Texas Leadership Scholars Program
- Collaborate among other Leadership & Service Council members to plan and execute the Leadership & Service Mixer for Spring 2026
All undergraduate student staff, graduate student staff, and Coordinators report to the Associate Director of Leadership & Service, Jasmine Jennings-Rentz.
Payrate: $12.00 per hour for 10 hours a week
Employee Evaluation Process: The Leadership & Service Council Performance Evaluation assesses a student staff member’s performance, highlights their skills and strengths, and constructively identifies areas for improvement. Student employees will complete an evaluation rubric with their direct supervisor at the end of every semester. Students will be evaluated based on the following qualities or skills:
- Programmatic
- Administrative
- Professional Development and Team Dynamics
Desired Skills or Qualities Needed for Position
- Event planning: the process of organizing and executing events and activities
- Organizational and administrative skills: skills that allow you to be efficient and effective when managing responsibilities. These skills could include time management, communication, attention to detail, and prioritization.
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends: Leadership & Service has several events that occur during the evenings and weekends. Evening events in include the Leadership & Service Mixer, Texas Leadership Scholars Program meetings, and requested leadership development workshops. Weekend events include Service Saturday, Bobcats LEAD Retreat, Bobcat Build’s Big Event, and requested leadership development workshops. This is not an exhaustive list.
- Public speaking or presentation facilitation: ability to speak in front of an audience and/or deliver a presentation
- Peer leadership: ability to lead or guide students in a 1:1 or group setting through activities and meetings
