Graduate Residence Directors (GRDs) provide critically important services to students living within our residential communities. The Graduate Residence is a live-in graduate staff member that works directly with a full-time Residence Hall Director (RD) to manage the daily operations of an assigned on-campus residential community. A successful GRD at Texas State is responsible for building a strong community, supporting the student staff they supervise, and generating meaningful opportunities for students to connect to campus through intentional interactions and connections. Critical functions of the position include building management, supervision, community engagement, crisis management, student success, and serving as an active department member. This position will report directly to the RD of the building(s) they oversee. The Graduate Residence Director must be able to physically perform the job’s essential duties, which include regularly accessing all areas of their assigned residential building and periodically accessing other campus areas. In emergencies, the Graduate Residence Director must be able to access all various building areas promptly and appropriately. The Graduate Residence Director will frequently utilize a computer and a phone.

Job Duties:

Supervision:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision and support of a staff of Resident Assistants and desk assistants within their assigned community.
  • Management of staff meetings, one-on-one meetings, and other interactions with staff to provide maximum support and direction to execute community goals.
  • Evaluate performance of student staff, including conducting performance evaluations to support their professional development.
  • Participate in selection and training efforts for all staff members.

Student Success & Community Engagement

  • Assist Residence Director in building a community designed to engage students in connecting with each other and to the larger institution to advance departmental, divisional, and institutional goals.
  • Direct, assess, and execute community development, engagement activities, and persistence initiatives per departmental directives to increase student retention and a sense of belonging at Texas State.
  • Work with assigned Living-Learning communities.
  • Serve as an advisor for Hall Council in developing community initiatives and student leadership.
  • Actively participate in divisional student success initiatives regarding mid-semester grade warning outreach, enrollment and registration outreach, residential feedback surveys, and other retention initiatives.

Crisis Management & Student Support

  • Actively engage with and seek to resolve issues for students of concern to ensure their support.
  • Serve as a conduct officer to address behavioral concerns within the assigned community.
  • Consistently be responsive to the needs of the assigned community in relation to community trends, student needs, and emergency response. Serve as a referral agent for students to resources across the institution.

Building Management

  • Assist with responsibilities for opening, closing, budget management, occupancy management, facilities, and desk operations within the assigned community.
  • Collaborate and meet regularly with assigned neighborhood team that consist of a Head Maintenance Worker and a Head Custodian to manage facilities related needs throughout the assigned community.
  • Oversee room occupancy, resident room change requests, and maintenance of resident and common spaces in the assigned community throughout the academic year.
  • Maintain essential office records as outlined by Texas State University.

Divisional & Departmental Responsibilities: 

  • Actively participate in departmental programs and projects designed to support the mission and goals of the department, division, and institution.
  • Participate actively as a member of the Division of Student Success and serve as a positive role model for students and staff.
  • Other duties as requested or required, whether specifically mentioned in this job description.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 1-2 years of experience in Residential Life (Resident Assistant, RHA, NRHH) or related field.
  • Previous experience with community engagement/development activities.
  • Previous experience with student support or retention initiatives
  • Previous experience in building management.

Payrate:

  • Monthly salary for first year Graduate Residence Director is an average rate of $1371/month and second year  Graduate Residence Director is an average rate of $1406/month.
    • Pay is calculated to account for an average of 20 hours of work per week per semester.
  • Staff apartment free of charge.
  • Tuition payments for full-time Graduate Students registered for 9 credit hours per fall and spring semester (a total of 18 credit hours) for each academic year.
    • The GRD tuition benefit is only applicable to classes taken at Texas State University.
    • Texas State will work with out of state Graduate Students through the hiring process to qualify for in-state tuition rates.

Evaluation Process/Timeline:

GRDs will participate in a supervisor evaluation at the end of the Fall and Spring semester with their direct supervisor each academic year. The evaluation will be based on the critical functions of the GRD position including community engagement, crisis management & student support, supervision, building management and serving as an active department member. In addition, the GRD will participate in weekly one-on-one meetings with their direct supervisor to discuss performance, development, and other aspects of the GRD position.   

Conditions of Employment:

  • The GRD must sign and abide by the terms and conditions of the Academic Year Contract.
  • GRDs must maintain fulltime enrollment in a graduate studies program at Texas State University.
    • Maintain enrollment in 9 credit hours for the fall and spring semester (total 18 credit hours) each academic year.
    • Enrollment during the summer semester is optional and is not covered by the GRD tuition benefit/payment. Summer employment in the GRD position is based on departmental need and is not guaranteed.
  • The GRD must remain in good academic standing and is required to maintain a minimum semester and cumulative GPA of 3.0. The last fall or spring semester (long semester) will be considered for the semester requirement. The overall Texas State GPA will be counted for GPA.
    • Newly hired GRDs cannot begin employment on GPA probation.
    • In the event where the GRD is terminated due to low GPA, the GRD must maintain a semester/cumulative GPA higher than 3.0 for at least two long semesters before reapplying for the position.
  • The GRD is required to live in the provided residence hall apartment and be available for irregular hours, extended work days, on-call emergencies, and weekends.
  • GRDs are responsible for submitting working hours in SAP by the Payroll Deadlines for the applicable fiscal year. Payroll Deadlines may be found at https://www.txst.edu/payroll/payroll-calendars.html. Submitting working hours on time is required in order to receive timely pay for hours worked.
    • GRDs are scheduled to complete 20 hours of work per week.
    • GRDs may not work more than 25 hours per week and may not be scheduled to work during class times.
  • The GRD may not have outside employment that interferes with the GRD position. All outside employment must be approved by the Director of Residential Experience or their designee based on position and academic performance.
  • The GRD must complete required university compliance training and other training assigned to the student worker. Compliance requirements must be kept up to date for all annual training.
  • The GRD must act in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws and remain in good judicial standing with TXST.
    • GRDs who are subject to a student conduct or administrative review process, decisions made will be viewed as separate processes from employment performance management.
    • GRDs must act as role models, demonstrating good conduct and positive contributions to the campus community as GRDs may be viewed as a representative of the department and institution.
  • The GRD position is security-sensitive, and a security screening/background check must be performed before the first day of work. Employment is contingent on the results of the background check.
  • GRDs who fail to comply with department and supervisory expectations, training, and guidelines as outlined will be subject to the GRD performance management process.
  • GRDs are not guaranteed reappointment to their GRD position academic year to academic year.
    • GRD's reappointment will be determined based on performance evaluations completed semesterly.
  • The GRD may be terminated from their positions in accordance with U.P.P.S. 07.07.04: GRD Termination, Separation, and Grievance Procedures and with the express approval of the appropriate authorities representing DHRL.
