The Student Success & Academic Services department provides programs and resources to Round Rock campus students to support academic and post-graduation goals with a focus on recruitment, persistence, retention and completion. Our department is a welcoming space and typically serves as the first point of contact for campus guests, prospective students, and community partners when they call and visit the Round Rock Campus.

Purpose of the Role (Why this role exists):
To provide support to students taking science courses through the Acadeum platform. This role will support students with the technical and logistical landscape of this platform as well as outreach to students on course progress or any other needs. 

Description (What you will do):

The Student Academic Support Assistant will serve as a peer resource to students enrolled in science courses through Acadeum. This role will provide drop-in support to help peers navigate the online learning environment, including logging into platforms, accessing course materials, and learning effective time management strategies for online coursework.

In addition, Student Academic Support Assistant will conduct outreach to students who appear to need support, such as those who have not logged into their course or accessed assignments, offering guidance and encouraging re-engagement with the course.

This is an on-campus position located in a designated computer lab space with flexible drop-in hours based on the assistant's class schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist students with logging into Acadeum courses and associated learning management systems.
  • Provide guidance on locating course materials, assignment deadlines, syllabi, and lab components.
  • Answer general questions about navigating and participating in an online course.
  • Support students with time management strategies and staying organized in an asynchronous learning environment.
  • Direct students to appropriate campus resources for academic support, advising, or student success coordinators.
  • Document common student concerns and questions to help improve support services.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when working with student information.
  • Meet 1:1 with program manager once a week to debrief possible student concerns and program updates.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled at Texas State University
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Comfortable using online platforms and learning management systems
  • Friendly, patient, and approachable demeanor
  • Ability to work independently and manage a consistent drop-in schedule
  • Experience taking online courses 
  • Previous peer mentoring, tutoring, or customer service experience

Work Schedule (When you are expected work):

  • Flexible drop-in hours scheduled in coordination with supervisor
  • Set up in a designated campus computer lab

Learning Outcomes

  • The Student Academic Support Assistant will identify and explain key functions of learning management systems used in online courses.
  • Student Academic Support Assistant will communicate effectively and empathetically with students. 
  • The Student Academic Support Assistant will learn to practice active listening and mentoring techniques to support student concerns. 
  • Student Academic Support Assistant will professionally convey information both in-person and digital communication. 
  • The Student Academic Support Assistant will identify student challenges and offer appropriate solutions or referrals to campus resources.

Evaluation Frequency

The Student Academic Support Assistant will be evaluated by their supervisor at the end of each long semester.

Starting Pay Rate:

$ 13.00
