Upward Bound Del Valle Academic Year (2025-2026) Tutor

Position is for the 2025 – 2026 academic year. This is a grant funded position. Continuation of this position is contingent upon grant funding.

Reports to the Director of the Upward Bound Del Valle Program.

The Upward Bound Del Valle tutor is responsible for providing individual and/or group tutoring to high school students enrolled in The Upward Bound Del Valle Program.

Tutors work to enhance students' subject understanding and foster meta-learning by teaching effective learning and study strategies. They also serve as positive role models, showing passion and commitment while supporting and empowering college-bound high school students with the potential for higher education success.

Important information for applicants:

Early morning, evening and weekend work may required.  

Off Campus Job Location- (This is an off-campus role and applicants must have reliable transportation to be considered for employment). You must have reliable transportation to get to the target school: Del Valle High School (5201 Ross Rd, Del Valle, TX 78617)

Mandatory Training 1 week prior to starting (via meetings at Texas State University San Marcos Campus, target school and/or teams/zoom)

Duties

  • Provide academic tutoring (individual and small group) to high school students
  • Tutor and assist students with daily homework and assignments.
  • Participate in tutor training sessions, team meetings, and additional workshops as arranged.
  • Be prompt, available and prepared for all tutoring time commitments.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of tutoring contacts and submit records to Director weekly.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor to student participants.
  • Assist with additional duties as needed (e.g. assisting with UB Orientation, organizing materials, field trips, etc.)

  • Upward Bound Del Valle Program Director (Direct)
  • Upward Bound Del Valle Program Coordinator (Indirect)

Work Schedule 

  • Weekdays in the afternoons (2 days a week)
  • Weekends (Saturdays) as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Must be available to travel to Del Valle High School multiple days a week.
  • Academically proficient and able to tutor in English, Math (Geometry, Algebra I/II, Calculus), or Science (Integrated Physics, Chemistry, Physics) required.
  • Experience tutoring one of the above-named subjects preferred.
  • Experience working with high school students preferred.
  • Demonstrated motivational and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of experience tutoring on a variety of subjects.

Employee Evaluation Process 

  • Weekly and monthly (informal)
  • End of each Semester (formal) facilitated by Program Director.
