Peer Mentor - TXST Round Rock Campus

The Student Success & Academic Services department provides programs and resources to Round Rock campus students to support academic and post-graduation goals with a focus on recruitment, persistence, retention and completion. Our department is a welcoming space and typically serves as the first point of contact for campus guests, prospective students, and community partners when they call and visit the Round Rock Campus.

Purpose of the Role (Why this role exists): 
Peer Mentors are upper-level students who provide continued positive peer support to help students transition to Texas State socially and academically. 

Required Qualifications (What we require you bring to the team): 

Have a minimum 2.75 Texas State GPA 

Have been enrolled at Texas State RRC for at least one long semester by the time the position begins in August 2025 

Have strong interpersonal skills 

Have a positive attitude 

Ability to demonstrate empathy, active listening, and provide constructive feedback 

Strong organizational and time-management abilities 

Are an active member of the Texas State community 

Are available to attend New Peer Mentor Training the week before the fall semester starts 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Prior mentoring support experience 

Familiarity with campus resources, services, and procedures 

Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends for special events 

 

Description (What you will do): 

Peer Mentors are upper-level students who provide continued positive peer support to help students transition to Texas State socially and academically by building relationships, promoting engagement, providing resources and support, and leading with an ethic of care.  

Responsibilities: 

Attend a bi-weekly Lead Peer Mentor meeting 

Attend 2 hours of Office Hours, and during your office hours, conduct outreach to mentees to schedule meetings, update your Virtual Notebook, and NavigateTXST.   

Attend a monthly meeting- Town Hall 

Host at least 2 hours of Bobcat Study Hours each week where you will invite your mentees to join you to promote good study habits 

Organize at least 1 event (not study hours) each semester to help mentees build connections with peers and the campus community 

Meet with all assigned students outside of class at least twice a semester (you will have around 20-30 students, depending on section sizes) 

Assist in organizing and leading program events, such as orientations, campus tours, and other department events. 

Encourage student attendance at academic/social events around Texas State 

Participate in program evaluations by providing feedback on the mentor-mentee relationship, program structure, and suggestions for improvement 

Help students become familiar with university resources and refer them as needed 

Assist students in interacting with faculty members 

Assist leadership with first-year student retention efforts.  

Additional tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Director and the Leadership team.   

Participate in training before the start of the semester and throughout the semester as needed 

 

Work Schedule (When you are expected work): 

Peer mentors will work between 3-7 hours per week. Mentors must attend their assigned course section each week (1 hour). Courses will be assigned to mentors that best fit their class schedule. Possible courses, US 1100, ELAR 1300, and/or MATH 1300 courses. Attend 2 hours of Office Hours to complete administrative duties such as logging meeting interactions and submitting weekly timesheets. Hours can happen Monday- Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. You may not work during a time when you have class, even if class is canceled or let out early/starts late.

Peer Mentors will be able to mentor first-year students utilizing effective mentoring techniques and motivational strategies.  

Peer Mentors will tailor their mentoring approach to meet the individual needs of each mentee.  

Peer Mentors will learn strategies to help first-year students build social networks and feel a sense of belonging to campus.   

Peer Mentors will demonstrate active listening and empathy in their interactions.   

Problem Solving & Critical Thinking  

Peer Mentors will be able to help first-year students analyze academic challenges and develop practical solutions.   

Peer Mentors will enhance their own critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Peer Mentors will develop leadership qualities such as accountability, responsibility, and independence.   

Peer Mentors will lead mentoring sessions effectively.   

Peer Mentors will lead by example and understand that they are role models to first-year students.   

Peer Mentors will set personal development goals and work towards achieving them throughout the mentoring program.  

Communication Skills  

Peer Mentors will enhance their verbal and written communication skills.  

Peer Mentors will demonstrate effective communication, in and out of the classroom and in individual and group settings.  

Peer Mentor will develop active listening skills and empathy.   

Ethical and Professional Conduct  

Peer mentors will understand and adhere to ethical guidelines and professional standards in mentoring relationships.  

Peer mentors will demonstrate confidentiality, respect, and integrity in all interactions.  

Peer mentors will establish boundaries between mentees and themselves.   

Conflict Resolution  

Peer mentors will develop skills in conflict resolution and mediation.  

Peer mentors will be able to address and resolve conflicts or issues that arise within the mentoring relationship or among peers.  

 

Training (How we prepare you): 

To receive adequate training, peer mentors will: 

Attend training the week before fall classes start 

Attend student staff meetings once a month with supervisor 

Attend bi-weekly peer mentor meetings 

 

Pay Rate: 
$500.00 stipend in 5 monthly payments 

Evaluation Frequency: 
All Peer Mentors will be evaluated based on their work and performance in the given semester. The supervisor and Leadership team will take a holistic approach when evaluating Peer Mentors and determine who will be invited back for the following semester.
